Jesús Nerio

Of Counsel

Jesús A. Nerio was born in the Republic of El Salvador. He and his family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in San Francisco where he finished High School and graduated from Heald Engineering College with his Bachelors of  Science degree in Electrical Engineering.  He worked for Bechtel, Inc., on the San Francisco transit system and was transferred to Atlanta in 1974.  He was the engineer in charge of the development of the MARTA transit vehicle.  In 1975, he was sent to Venezuela where he headed a team of engineers in the design of the Metro System in Caracas.

Upon his return from Venezuela, Bechtel sent Jesús to the Atlanta Law School where he graduated in 1980 with a Juris Doctor Degree.  From 1980 until 1984, he was assigned as a lawyer for the Construction Division on the MARTA Program where he was responsible for construction claims.

In 1985, Jesús opened a private law practice, representing primarily the burgeoning Atlanta Hispanic community, in Criminal Defense, Family Law, and Immigration Law cases.  As a bi-lingual attorney, he participates as an instructor for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Bar Association in the “Latino Law School” which provides legal information to the Hispanic Community in Georgia.

Jesús is a founding member and past president of the Georgia Hispanic Bar Association. He was appointed as a member of the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Racial and Ethnic Bias in the Judicial System.  He is also active in the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Equality, the State Bar Disciplinary Board, the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Public Trust and Confidence, and the Supreme Court Commission on Interpreters where he was a principal in the development of the Georgia Supreme Court Rule governing the use of interpreters in all Georgia Courts.  He is also a member of the Supreme Court Standing Committee for the Commission on the Unauthorized Practice of Law.

Jesús is a frequent speaker at Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) programs for lawyers, and at Continuing Judicial Education (ICJE) programs for judges, on cultural diversity, domestic violence, as well as immigration and immigration consequences to criminal prosecutions.  He was nominated and received the Chief Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service in June of 2000.

Jesús is also an ordained Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church and is assigned to the St. Peter Chanel Church parish in Alpharetta, GA.  He is a highly-respected and sought-after resource for ministers of all denominations who have Hispanic members of their congregation in need of legal services.
